Beginning with the first political posters at the end of the 19th century, and passing through the two world wars, revolutions, the Cold War and May 68, propaganda posters reflect the great upheavals of the 20th century.

Before 1914, propaganda posters were in general simple printed texts, statements without graphic creation. These ‘simple' posters were evidently less expensive.

So, illustrated political posters are rare.

1914 - 1918 THE FIRST WORLD WAR

It’s the first World War and the need was felt to mobilize the public at home to support the war effort and thus an enormous amount of propaganda posters were produced.

The walls of France. England and the United States were covered with posters to support the men at the Front, to sell the huge loans and to demonize the German enemy. These posters marked this period and would influence graphic art after the war, with their emotional and Realist style.

CHINESE POSTERS

The Chinese Communist Party produced a very important number of propaganda posters, notably during the Cultural Revolution.

Original posters from this time are rare and highly sought after, such as those below in their pure Chinese revolutionary style.

Socialism advanced everywhere guided by the ‘Little Red Book’ by Mao Zedong.

During the events of May 1968, screen print work shops in the Parisian art schools were working around the clock. Students printed more than 600 different posters in support of the movement.

RED ARMY FACTION - ROTE ARMEE FRAKTION - RAF

The ‘Red Army Faction, in German, ‘Rote Armee Fraktion’ was also called the ‘Baader Meinhof Gang’ after the names of its leaders. The RAF was an extreme left German terrorist organization founded in 1968. This urban guerrilla movement encouraged revolutionary armed struggle and carried out a large number of bombings and assassinations up until 1998. It was allied to the Italian Red Brigades (Brigatte Rosse) and the ‘Stella Rossa’ and other terrorist movement groups.

These two PLO leaders were considered by the MOSSAD to have participated in the hostage crisis at the Munich Olympic Games in 1972 which ended in the assassination of 11 members of the Olympic Committee.

SOLIDARNOSC POSTERS

Solidarnosc is a revolutionary worker's trade union movement founded in Poland in 1980 by Lech Walesa. This movement was politically opposed, though in a pacific way, to the pro-soviet government and the state of siege, decreed by the general in sunglasses, Wojciech Jaruzelski.

After the coup d'état, Solidarnosc was supported by solidarity movements in Western Europe, who printed numerous posters.

This trade union was one of the forces which shook the soviet system and which would finally lead to the opening of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the URSS.
