For the first time, the organising committee published several series of posters to be sold to the public.
This was the beginning of ‘Olympic merchandising’.
The sports series and the art series enjoyed great success.
The art series was printed in three editions: the first on fine paper, the second on deluxe paper printed with metallic ink, embossed motifs or collages. Finally, the third edition was signed and numbered by the artists.

Moscow 1980
In response to the international boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games following the invasion of Afghanistan on 24 December 1979, the Soviet government organised a major poster competition throughout the country.
250 posters were selected from 8,500 entries and printed. According to propaganda figures, some 18,750,000 (!) posters were distributed throughout the USSR.
Many of these posters prominently feature the Moscow Games logo.
It shows the red star atop the stylised silhouette of the Kremlin's Vodovzvodnaya tower (Водовзводная башня) dominating the five Olympic rings.
