Jusqu'aux années 1960, la compagnie maritime britannique Cunard était la plus réputée au monde, surtout pour ses deux paquebots légendaires, le Queen Mary et le Queen Elizabeth.
Il ne fallait que cinq jours pour effectuer la traversée entre New York et Cherbourg. Les deux navires se croisaient, le Queen Mary ou le Queen Elizabeth quittait New York tous les mercredis pour arriver en Angleterre le lundi suivant.
