Cette pantomime jouée pour la première fois en 1814 est centrée sur un personnage ayant réellement existé: Richard Whittington, né en 1350.
Selon la légende, Dick Whittington, jeune orphelin, est sorti de la pauvreté et a fait fortune grâce à son chat. Parti pour tenter sa chance à Londres, Dick Whittington vend, tout au long de son périple, les services de son chat afin d'éradiquer divers rongeurs nuisibles.
