SAS a été fondée le 1er Août 1946 avec la fusion de quatre sociétés scandinaves: deux de Suède: ABA et SLA (Svensk Intercontinental Lufttraffik), DNL un transporteur national de Norvège (Det Norske Luftfartselskap) et le transporteur national du Danemark (DDL - Danske Luftfartselskap AB). Ils ont formé les OSAS pour voler de Scandinavie vers les routes d'outre-mer. L'entreprise a rapidement été rebaptisée SAS "Scandinavian Airlines System". Le premier vol sous la bannière SAS utilisait un Douglas DC-4 vers New York, puis Bangkok et Buenos Aires. A partir de 1953, les Douglas DC-6 ont été utilisés sur les liaisons long-courrier. Les avions DC-7c ont pris le relais.
