En 1955 Picasso installe son atelier dans la villa "La Californie" à Cannes dans laquelle Il y entretient un pigeonnier. La vue sur la mer depuis sa fenêtre et les nombreux pigeons vont l'inspirer pour une série de tableaux intitulés "les pigeons" peints durant l'année 1957.
Picasso a choisit cette peinture pour une affiche du ministère des Travaux publics et des Transports éditée pour la promotion du tourisme sur la côte d'Azur.
