Après avoir acheté au Suédois Gideon Sundbäck le brevet de la fermeture à glissière, Martin Othmar Winterhalter fonde l'entreprise Riri AG en 1936 à Mendrisio (Tessin).
Le design simple et efficace de l'affiche de Hans A. Aeschbach de 1948 évoque la mode féminine où la fermeture Eclair devient la star du défilé.
