"Fly Swissair to North America"
On the 2nd of May 1947, Swissair's first DC-4 took off from Geneva to New York, with 7 crew members, 28 guests, officials and journalists on board.
The plane took off at night from Cointrin airport to the sound of the Swiss and American national anthems.
In 1949, Swissair's transatlantic flights began with former USAAF C-54 transport aircraft converted into Douglas DC-4s. These aircrafts enabled Swissair to carry 55 passengers from Switzerland to New York's Idlewild Airport (JFK), via a stopover in Gander on the way west. The Swissair DC-4s were in service from 1946 to 1959. At that time, the Swiss airline was a partner of United Airlines.
