May Belfort Petit Casino – Toulouse-Lautrec – 1895
‘I love my little cat, I do, with soft black silky hair...’ sang May Belfort (1872–1929) on the stage of the Petit Casino in 1895.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec immortalises this precise moment in his advertising poster for the Irish actress and singer's show. Wearing a child's bonnet and a red dress, holding a little black cat in her arms, she performs one of her most popular songs, ‘Daddy wouldn't buy me a bow wow’, a humorous song with a double meaning.
One of Toulouse-Lautrec's masterpieces, in excellent condition, finely printed in lithography (on stone) in 1895.
Sold in a magnificent Art Nouveau-style frame.
Rare version with the text ‘Petit Casino’ overprinted in olive green. (réf Wittrock, poster 14, version C)
