In 1935, Serge Lifar (1904/5-1986) is at the peak of his fame. He stages his most famous choreography, "Icare", with sets and costumes by Picasso. This production was revolutionary in that it used only the rhythm produced by the dancers, without music. That same year, Lifar publishes a manifesto in which he proclaimed dance as an art form independent of music.
With its elegance and purity of lines, Paul Colin's poster underlines the almost mythological aura of the dancer and choreographer: Lifar is the face of ballet in France.
Commenting on the poster, expert Jack Rennert wrote: "Surely this is one of the finest posters ever created for a dancer, even among the many superb dance posters produced by Colin. It has to rank at or near the top..."
