" Between hammer... and anvil" by Jean Carlu
Poster distributed during the Second World War by the Allies during the course of the liberation of France, published by the Commissariat à l'information de la République française and printed by McCandlish Lithograph Corporation in Philadelphia, USA. The anvil is marked with the Lorraine cross in the colours of the French flag.
Poster artist Jean Carlu was an early opponent of Nazism and in 1932 set up the Office de Propagande Graphique pour la Paix (Graphic Propaganda Office for Peace). During the war, he worked on General de Gaulle's propaganda for Free France and for the American Ministry of Information.
This historical poster was printed in Philadelphia in April 1944, for the provisional French government in Algeria and imported the 6 of June 1944 in the Free France by the allied soldiers. "Nazis will be destroyed between the Allied hammer and the French anvil" the French expression for "between the devil and the deep blue sea". One of the most famous Jean Carlu poster. A Museum piece.
