'On this line, no trains run on Sundays.'
In this rare poster for the Chemin de fer Yverdon-Ste Croix, graphic designer John Graz depicts a magnificent field of blue gentians and white anemones on the slopes of the Chasseron in the Swiss Jura.
William Barbey, who built and owned the line, was a staunch Darbyste. To prevent the workers from the music box factories in the Sainte-Croix valley from going down to Yverdon on Saturday evenings to party with their wages, he banned trains from running on Sundays until his death in 1918.
Thus, a worker who went down to this city of perdition on Saturday would not be able to come back up on Sunday and return to work on Monday morning.
For this reason, all timetables and posters from this period read: 'On this line, no trains run on Sundays.'
