Poster for American politician Eugene McCarthy (1916-2005), one of the candidates in the Democratic primary for the 1968 US presidential election. The campaign, which was marked by the assassination of another Democratic candidate, Robert Kennedy, was particularly chaotic and eventually saw a third Democratic candidate, Hubert Humphrey, lose to the Republican Richard Nixon. On this official campaign poster, Eugene McCarthy appears as a pacifist, fiercely opposed to the Vietnam War, with a dove symbolising peace illuminating his face.
