Fine and rare Swiss poster by Emil Cardinaux for the Jungfrau Railway Company, showing "the Polar dogs at the Jungfraujoch, altitude 3454m."
Emil Cardinaux's poster for the Jungfrau Railway (Jungfraubahn) celebrates the beauty of the Swiss landscape. Nature is highlighted and, contrary to appearances, humans are relegated to the background. On a sunny and cheerful day, the snow-covered mountain becomes the main subject. It is imposing, majestic, but not oppressive. The spectator does not admire it in the distance, but has the feeling of being at the very centre of the landscape, of being an integral part of this scene.
Cardinaux creates here an extremely luminous poster using a reduced palette of colours, mainly white and blue, used in solid colours. A few touches of yellow and red highlights enhance the work and give a feeling of warmth and sunshine. A subtle play of light and shadow shapes the mountainous landscape. The poster is composed of horizontal lines with the title, the sledge dogs, the mountain peaks and the sky, and a diagonal line running across the entire poster, separating the foreground from the background, creating a feeling of depth.
The viewer is transported into a serene, peaceful and silent nature. Switzerland in all its beauty in the eyes of Cardinaux.
