On 23 June 1894, Baron Pierre de Coubertin proposed the re-establishment of the Olympic Games, which was unanimously approved. This also marked the foundation of the International Olympic Committee. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896.
This poster, designed by Edouard Elzingre in 1914, celebrates the 20th anniversary of the rebirth of the Olympic Games.
Rather than being depicted as an ancient Greek athlete, the winner is shown as a Roman hero. Instead of an olive wreath, symbol of peace, he is crowned with laurel, symbol of victory and glory. He holds a statuette of Niké, the winged goddess who rewarded winners.
Conceived by Pierre de Coubertin, the famous Olympic ‘logo’ (five interlaced rings) was presented for the first time on the occasion of this 20th anniversary.
