Erik Nitsche created this poster aiming at promoting Liquid Carbonic’s medical Gases. This poster is one of his rarest illustrations for General Dynamics, implementing a hypnotic kinetic psychedelic design.
By connecting the motif with the text on the poster, the viewer is able to understand Nitsche's poster.
There are 3 stages to this understanding:
1- An unrelated spiral composed of three colours catches the eye of the viewer and draws him into its vortex.
2- By reading the text "medical gases, liquid carbonic", the viewer understands that the movement created by the spiral illustrates the division of medical gases, carbon dioxide and liquid nitrogen.
3- This initial interpretation is confirmed by the choice of colours, which go from violet to black, getting colder and colder: violet made up of red and blue, blue, then black, close to absolute zero. It's a downward spiral, getting colder and colder, a perfect illustration of liquefaction of these gases.
Nitsche's abstract spiral motif takes on its full meaning with the reading of the text on the poster.
