Reard - The world's first swimming costume
On 5th July 1946, Louis Réard introduced the ‘bikini’. His swimming costume was essentially a bra with two triangles connected by strings. It was considerably smaller than the ‘Atome’, a two-piece swimming costume designed in 1932 by Jacques Heim. After the 1946 atomic bomb test on Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands, Reard named this fashion bomb ‘The Bikini, smaller than the world's smallest swimming costume’.
This creation provoked a scandal and was banned in many cities until the end of the 1960s. ‘Reard of California’ became an international swimwear brand, as this 1950s poster shows.
