SAS was founded the 1st of August 1946 with the merge of four Scandinavian companies: two Sweden's carriers: ABA and SLA - Svensk Intercontinental Luft Traffik, the Norway's national carrier DNL - Det Norske Luftfart Selskap and the Danish national carrier DDL - Dansk Luftfart Selskap AB. They formed the OSAS to fly the overseas routes from Scandinavia, the company was rapidly renamed SAS - Scandinavian Airlines System. The first flight under the SAS banner was using a Douglas DC-4. From 1953, Douglas DC-6s were used on long-haul routes, with Douglas DC-7c aircraft following.
