Beautiful SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System) poster for the Far East.
SAS was founded on 1 August 1946 when four Scandinavian companies merged: two from Sweden (ABA and SLA Svensk Intercontinental Lufttraffik), DNL a national carrier from Norway (Det Norske Luftfartselskap) and the national carrier from Denmark (DDL - Danske Luftfartselskap AB). They formed OSAS to fly from Scandinavia to overseas routes. The company was soon renamed SAS "Scandinavian Airlines System". The first flight under the SAS banner used a Douglas DC-4 from Stockholm to New York, then Bangkok and Buenos Aires. The individual carriers handed over all operations to SAS by 1951. From 1953, Douglas DC-6s were used on long-haul routes. DC-7c aircraft then took over.
In the early 21st century SAS split into four separate carriers, one based in each of the three founding countries and another for international flights; all continued to use the SAS name. Today the SAS Group operates scheduled passenger, freight, and mail flights between more than 100 cities around the world.
SAS was renowned for its high quality of service.
