Armin HOFMANN
(1920 – 2020)
Armin Hofmann was one of the main initiators of the international typographic style that emerged in Switzerland in the 1950s. He was a key figure in the Basel School of Design, one of the most progressive design schools in Switzerland, where he taught from 1946 to 1986.
Hofmann is known for his use of black and white imagery, his simplification of form and his use of photomontage. In his posters, Hofmann uses limited colours and shapes. He sees typography as an integral part of the overall graphic expression and not simply as a means of conveying literal information.
