Celestino PIATTI

(1922 – 2007)

Celestino Piatti is a Swiss graphic designer, illustrator, painter, ceramist and sculptor born in 1922. After an apprenticeship as a graphic designer with Gebrüder Fretz A.G. in Zurich (1938-1942), he worked for the studio of Fritz Bühler in Basel. In 1948, he opened his own studio in Riehen (Basel) and began his career as a poster artist. He produced more than 500 posters, 30 of which were awarded the Swiss Poster Award, and in 1957 became a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI). In 1961, the publishing house Deutscher Taschenbuch Verlag (DTV) hired him to illustrate their books. He designed the covers of more than 6,000 titles and was also responsible for the company's typography (the sans-serif Akzidenz in black on a white background), advertising and posters. From 1963 onwards, his illustrations of children's books with their stylised animals made him famous all over the world.
