Original business card for the Edmond Sagot bookshop/gallery in Paris, designed by Felix Vallotton.
This woodcut by Vallotton, entitled ‘Les amateurs d'estampes’ (The Print Lovers), was first used for the Edmond Sagot bookshop catalogue in December 1892.
Bookseller, publisher, art dealer and one of the first poster collectors, Edmond Sagot (1857-1917) used the same image for his business cards, first for his gallery at 18 rue Guénégaud, then in 1894 with the address of his new gallery, 39bis rue de Châteaudun in Paris.
This engraving by the artist Félix Vallotton humorously depicts collectors crowding in front of the Sagot bookshop, reflecting the craze for posters and prints at the time. With its dynamic composition, Vallotton creates an image that is now considered one of the finest examples of his engraved work.
