Designed by architect Charles-Thévenaz and built in less than eight months, the Capitole cinema-theatre opened its doors in Lausanne on 29 December 1928. The largest cinema in Switzerland, with 1,077 seats, a cinema organ and an orchestra pit, it hosted films, concerts, music hall, theatre and conferences! The first film shown was ‘The Dramatic Conquest of the Matterhorn’ (Der Kampf ums Matterhorn), a silent film by Mario Bonnard and Nunzio Malasomma.
The Capitole-Théâtre's promotional poster was designed by Johannes Emil Müller. Elegant and majestic, it features the name of the cinema in large letters above the illuminated building.
The Capitole became the centre of the Swiss National Film Archive in 2010. It has just reopened its doors in February 2024 after several years of restoration.
