Jasper Johns, Moratorium
In 1969, Jasper Johns was commissioned by the Leo Castelli Gallery in Los Angeles to design a poster for the first Moratorium Day, a demonstration against the Vietnam War.
Johns took the image of the American flag, changing its colours and stencilling the word ‘Moratorium’ underneath. The artist's flag, in shades of green, orange and black instead of red, white and blue, looks toxic and sickly. The mottled green resembles camouflage, while the white hole in the centre evokes a bullet hole.
This poster, a symbol of protest against the war, has become one of the best-known images of the period.
