In this poster for the Nouvelle Compagnie Havraise Péninsulaire de Navigation, powerful Madagascan rowers, wearing round straw hats, lead their boat towards the ship in the background. These sailors immediately indicate that French East Africa was the destination of this company, which served Madagascar, the Comoros, Mauritius and Réunion.
In the background, the ship is at anchor. The islands of the Indian Ocean often had no harbour to accommodate the great ocean liners of the time. The ships remained anchored at sea, close to the shore, and passengers and goods had to be transferred in rowing boats.
This scene highlights the change of scenery and the adventure of travelling along this maritime route.
