Monaco Aquarium 1939
This 1939 poster for the Monaco Aquarium offers an open window on the marine world.

Attracted to science and travel from an early age, Prince Albert I (1848-1922) devoted a large part of his life to studying the oceans before deciding to build an aquarium in Monaco. The first stone was laid in April 1899, and the inauguration took place on 29 March 1910.
The Oceanographic Museum is one of Monaco's most monumental buildings. All the ornamentation, both on the façade and inside the rooms, has the sea as its theme: sea creatures, maritime scenes and symbolic figures.
Captain Cousteau was head of the museum from 1957 to 1988, carrying on the tradition of maritime expeditions aboard the famous Calypso.
