Montreux - Casino's swimming pool 1956
In August 1954, a competition was organised to revitalise the Casino de Montreux financially, with the aim of ‘attracting a new, young clientele by giving the Casino a pleasant, lively atmosphere through the creation of an open-air swimming pool’. The first prize was awarded in November 1954 to Lausanne architect M.F. Sillig for his ‘Parasol’ project.
Opened in 1956, the swimming pool became famous for its ‘bow tie’ shape, which is also reminiscent of a female silhouette. Poster artist and pin-up designer Pierre-Laurent Brenot used this ‘bow tie’ shape in the line of the swimming costume worn by the young woman in the foreground. He created a poster that embraced the aims of the competition, to attract a young, dynamic clientele to the shores of Montreux.
