This pantomime, first performed in 1814, is based on a real-life character: Richard Whittington, born in 1350.
According to legend, Dick Whittington, a young orphan, rose from poverty and made his fortune thanks to his cat. On his way to London to try his luck, Dick Whittington sold his cat's services to eradicate various rodent pests.
