In 1921, Gabrielle Chanel asked Ernest Beaux, then a perfume maker at the Russian court, to create "a woman's perfume with a woman's smell". Two series of samples, numbered 1 to 5 and 20 to 24, are presented to Chanel. She chose n°5 and said "I'm launching my collection on May 5th, the fifth month of the year, let's give him the number he's wearing and this number 5 will bring him luck". The mythical perfume was born.
