Pablo PICASSO (after)

1961

99 x 66 cm
38 x 25 inch

In his series of paintings entitled ‘Les Pigeons’ (The Pigeons) from 1957, Picasso offers a view of the bay of Cannes from the window of his studio located in his villa ‘La Californie’.
Deeply affected by the death of Matisse in 1954, Picasso remembers his friend in this series with the use of bright colours reminiscent of Matisse's views of Nice. The two painters shared a passion for pigeons, a subject dear to Picasso since childhood.
One of the paintings from ‘Les Pigeons’ series was used to create this poster promoting tourism in Cannes and on the French Riviera.
First edition printed in lithography by Mourlot in 1961.
