Located on the edge of the Chantilly forest, near Paris, the Lys-Chantilly beach was inaugurated on the 2nd of July 1933. Wealthy tourists arrived by seaplane, workers with paid holidays (congés payés) took specially chartered trains from Paris to spend a relaxing weekend. With its bar-restaurant-dancing, refreshment stands, playgrounds, solarium and an artificial wave pool fed by filtered water from the Oise, the beach at Lys-Chantilly embodies modernity and luxury within reach of all budgets.
Composed of strong, dynamic lines and a reduced colour palette, this Art Deco poster illustrates the 1930s ideal of a sporty and healthy youth.
