The mid-19th century saw the development of seaside resorts, attracting aristocrats and the bourgeoisie. On the beach, women wore long, covering tunics, often with tights and swimming shoes. It wasn't until 1905 that Annette Kellermann, a champion swimmer, invented a swimming costume (leotard) to help her swim in her competitions.
