'White cycles, by the White Sewing Machine Cie, London & Paris'. At the turn of the century a few sewing machine manufacturers have diversified in cycles production.
Thomas Howard White, founded the White Manufacturing Company in Templeton Massachusetts in 1858. From 1866 the company was based in Cleveland Ohio and was incorporated as the White Sewing Machine Co. in 1876. In the late 1890s the company diversified operations and began manufacturing bicycles among other products such as roller skates, kerosene lamps, automatic lathes and screw machines.
Thomas Howard White had three sons who began development of automobiles in 1900 from within a section of their father’s factory. In 1901 the company sold it’s first steam powered cars. By 1905 it became necessary to separate the automobile department from the parent company. Known as “White Steamers”, the White Motor Company was formed. A 1907 White Steamer was one of the early Presidential White House vehicles. The company went on to produce gasoline consumer automobile models and heavy equipment used during World War II.
