Following the rejection of women's membership of the Society of Swiss Painters and Sculptors, a dozen women artists founded the Société Romande des femmes peintres et sculpteurs in Lausanne in 1902.
Their first exhibition in 1903 was a huge success and was praised by the press. Several other exhibitions were organised on a regular basis in French-speaking Switzerland.
