MOPP (Max OPPENHEIMER)
(1885 – 1954)
Max Oppenheimer was an Austrian painter, lithographer, and graphic artist also known by the pseudonym Mopp.
In 1900, Oppenheimer entered the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, then the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 1903. He showed a great interest in Impressionism. Mopp joined the OSMA group, one of the first Czech avant-garde associations, heavily influenced by Picasso, Bracque, and Cubism. His encounter with Oskar Kokoschka influenced him stylistically, and his works at that time resembled German Expressionism. Max Oppenheimer emigrated to Switzerland in 1915 and participated in the first Dada exhibition in Zurich in 1916. He lived in Geneva from 1919 to 1921, notably in Hodler's studio. Mopp exhibited several times in Geneva at the Galerie Moos, creating several highly avant-garde posters for these occasions.
