Mark ROTHKO

(1903 – 1970)

Mark Rothko belongs to the generation of artists who completely revolutionised the essence and conception of abstract painting. His colour combinations draw the viewer into a space filled with an inner light. Rothko always refused any attempt to interpret his paintings. What interested him above all was the viewer's experience. Rothko is associated with the American abstract expressionist movement, although he refused to be categorised in this way, deeming it ‘alienating’.
