Marcel-Donato BRAZZOLA

(1905 – 1982)

Marcel-Donato Brazzola is a Swiss painter born in Lausanne in 1905. After studying philosophy and law, he attended the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Lyon and Lausanne. From 1950 onwards, Brazzola exhibited regularly in Switzerland and abroad: Paris, Rome, Milan and Venice. After having produced figurative works (landscapes, still lifes, portraits), he turned to abstraction, which allowed him to transpose themes inspired by religious meanings into his art. He then participated in the first exhibition of abstract art in Switzerland (1957, Neuchâtel). In addition to his important pictorial work, he also created tapestries (Sèvres, Aubusson), stained glass windows (Prilly-Lausanne, Monthey and Champéry's Church), ceramics and church decorations (Bienne). He produced only one poster during his career, that for the Taverne du Continentale in Lausanne, with a cat dipping its paw in a fondue pot (circa 1930).
