André SIMON (Andreas)

(1899 – 1959)

André (Andreas) Simon was a Swiss graphic designer born in the canton of Glarus. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva from 1922 to 1925 and then at the École des Arts appliqués in Paris until 1929. He returned to Switzerland that same year, settling in Geneva where he would spend his entire career.
André Simon combines the graphic style of French cubism, as seen in the work of Cassandre, with Swiss Sachplakat (object poster) through his inventive typography and highly structured compositions.
He was very prolific in the 1940s, creating numerous posters for brands such as Loterie Romande and Vautier cigarettes.
At the end of the decade, he also designed two superb, dynamic posters for the automotive industry, one for Fiat and the other for the 18th Geneva Motor Show.
