Markus SCHNEIDER

(1938 – 2021)

Markus Schneider is a painter and graphic designer from Basel who worked mainly in the 1960s and 1970s.
At the beginning of his career, he worked in advertising as a graphic designer. At the time, he won competitions against established artists for his pencil skills. He then decided to cut himself off from society and lived a bohemian existence for the rest of his life. He lived on the streets or squatted in attics or upper rooms during the winter. A documentary filmmaker from Basel, Edgar Hagen, made a film about his life path (The Prodigal Son, 1996).
