Alex Walter DIGGELMANN

(1902 – 1987)

One of Switzerland's most famous graphic designers, Alex Walter Diggelmann (1902-1987) began his career as a drawing teacher in his native Bern. After studying art in Paris (Académie Julian) and Leipzig, he moved to Zurich, where he worked as a freelance graphic designer.

At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, he won the gold medal in the "graphic arts" category for his "Arosa" poster. Indeed, from 1912 to 1948, the Olympic Games organised art and literature competitions alongside sporting contests. Alex W. Diggelmann won two more medals at the 1948 London Olympics for his posters "World Championship for Cycling" (silver medal) and "World Championship for Ice Hockey" (bronze medal), the gold medal not having been awarded.

Diggelmann also designed the UEFA Cup trophy and the FIS (Fédération Internationale de Ski) medal, still in use today.

Diggelmann's work is not limited to posters: he also creates murals and illustrations for books.
