Dans la fin des années 70, Andy Warhol expérimente avec des formes de couleurs, imprimées en sérigraphie, donnant l'impression de collages.
L'image utilisée pour cet auto-portrait de l'artiste conjugue un tirage photographique avec des aplats de couleurs en sérigraphie.
Accordant énormément d'importance à son image publique, Warhol réalise de nombreux auto-portraits de 1964 jusqu'à sa mort en 1987.
