Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), the most innovative poster artist of La Belle Epoque

Here a music sheet cover designed by Toulouse Lautrec for his friend and singer Aristide Bruant. This is the original cover printed in lithography in 1906.

Toulouse-Lautrec's posters show the society of Paris during the Belle Epoque, especially its nightlife. He invites us to become a spectator-voyeur of the scene depicted, as in "Reine de Joie".

He invented new techniques in lithography (crachis, a splatter effect), simplified the lines and the drawing, leaving the background plain, as in his many representations of "Aristide Bruant".
