In 1877, 5 pairs of curved wooden planks were sent from Norway to the ‘Grand St. Bernard’ hospice in Valais. The monks gleefully discovered that they were able to walk and even slide on the snow, at that time using only one ski pole.

A funny poster by the painter Albert Muret featuring priests skiing from the Grand Saint-Bernard hospice with the famous "Grand St.Bernard" dogs.

Usually this poster is dated 1913 by Swiss museums. In the past we found one proof with a 1910 railway time-table posted on it. This means that it was printed in 1910 for the opening of the Martigny - Orsières railway. A very old wintersport poster finely printed in lithography (on stone) and in excellent condition.
