Theâtre de la Renaissance, Sarah Bernard, la Samaritaine

Mucha Alphonse / 1899

Theâtre de la Renaissance, Sarah Bernard, la Samaritaine

Theâtre de la Renaissance, Sarah Bernard, la Samaritaine

Original Plate n°166 from "les Maîtres de l'Affiche" finely printed by stone-lithography in 1899. Alphonse Mucha has created this beautiful Art nouveau poster in 1897 for Sarah Bernard, the most famous French actrice from the turn of the century. La Samaritaine is a biblical play written by Edmond Rostand. Photina from Samaria in Palestine, convert all her tribe to Christianity. The plates of "les Maitres de l'Affiche" were printed between 1896 to 1900 under the artistic direction of Jules Chéret. During the height of the 1890's poster collecting, the poster transcended its original advertising function: it become a piece of art sold through art galleries and avidly sought by collectors. The large size and the rarity created problems for collectors which we are still trying to solve. One attempt to deal with this problem at the end of the nineteen century resulted in the publication of "Les Maîtres de l'Affiche". This Monthly publication, available by subscription, provided small format versions of the best of the poster being published. They all have the editor and the plate number printed in the left bottom corner and a dry stamp showing a lithographer at work in the right corner.Today they remain highly collectible examples of the finest of 1890's poster Art
