Vintage Posters - Authentic - The place to find vintage art

How to handle your vintage poster

Poster can be stored rolled or kept flat, but the way to appreciate it would be to frame it.

Mounting

Without any professional backing, the poster will buckle inside the frame, depending on humidity and temperature variations. This is not damage, it is just a question of aesthetics. Do not stick it on a cardboard or a wood panel. Do not use any glue or tape. If you would like to avoid the buckling, it would have to be backed on Linen or Japan paper.

  • On linen : Mounted on cotton-linen and acid free paper (linenbacked)
  • On soft linen : Mounted on cotton-linen and Japan paper (backed on softlinen)
  • On Japan : Mounted on a thin sheet of Japan paper (backed on Japan paper)

Framing

Ask your framer to lay the poster on a flat surface before framing, in order to flatten the mounting. Never use glue or tape of any kind. Do not stick it on a cardboard or a wood panel. Also ask your framer to add a sheet of acid-free paper (‘conservation museum paper’) inside the frame, between the poster and the back of the frame. This added sheet will protect the poster from the acidity, and help the color conservation. If possible ask him to keep the visibility of the printer and the marks of the stone-lithography. This will show the authenticity of your poster.

Mounted on linen: You will receive your poster with a white backing-border of 3cm (1 inch) remaining all around the poster to protect it, especially during transportation and handling. Usually this over-size backing-margin would be trimmed at 3 mm (1/10 inch) by the framer. The top of the frame will just cover the border of the poster. Of course, never cut the poster itself.

Mounted on Japan paper or not backed: Before framing, make it as flat as possible and frame it “as is”.

Glass or plexiglass.

There are different kinds: regular glass, polarized glass (expensive but fabulous), regular plexiglas (especially for large size) or anti-UV protection glass (97% - 99%) especially in case of direct sun-light.

Hanging your poster frame

It’s time to enjoy your original poster! Fix it strongly on the wall, large sizes are heavy. Do not forget to protect your poster from the direct sunlight, otherwise use an anti-UV glass or a plexiglas.

How to pull a poster out of the hard tube

If you find it difficult to take the poster out of the tube, the best way is to retighten the poster with your fingers, and then it should come out easier.
