General Dynamics by Erik Nitsche

General Dynamics was founded in 1952 with the merger of 'Electric Boat' and 'Canadair Ltd'. General Dynamics has different activities in scientific research, such as atomic energy, electricity, electronic intelligence and space dynamics. They produce aircraft, rockets, nuclear power stations, medical instruments against cancer etc. They built the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine.

Eric Nitsche, as Art director, designed the famous three series of posters for General Dynamics between 1955 and 1960 at the occasion of the IAEA conferences. They are now in museum collections and are prized by avant-garde collectors. The complete collection is very rare and hard to complete.

The International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy was helded at the United Nations in Geneva From 8 to 20 August 1955. The foundation in 1956 of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is a result of this conference. A second conference was also helded in 1958 in Geneva.

The exact date of each poster is not certain, but we were able to precised most of them.

'Exploring the universe' is the second serie designed in 1957 and 1958, to show the research activities of the company, on the occasion of the second International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, Geneva 1958. At this occasion the atomic reactor 'Triga' was presented to the public.

Erik Nitsche Biography (1908 - 1998)
:
Erik Nitsche was a pioneer in the design of books, annual reports, and other printed material that relied on meticulous attention to the details of page composition, the elegance of simple type presentation, and the juxtaposition of elements on a page. His hallmarks were impeccably clear design, brilliant colors, smart typography, and an adherence to particular geometric foundations.
Erik Nitsche studied in Lausanne, Switzerland, and moved to the United States at the age of 26, where he had a successful career as graphic designer and art director. In 1955 he was hired as art director for the engineering company General Dynamics. He designed a breakthrough series of posters, in addition to designing their corporate image, annual reports, and advertising. After 1960's he worked mainly on children's books.
