The Olympic Spirit

Olympic Poster Exhibition

"Created to announce an event, a poster possesses the astonishing and fascinating  quality of becoming , with the passage of time, the symbol and the indelible mark that will be engraved for ever in the collective memory of mankind"
Juan Antonio Samaranch, IOC president, 1983.

At the occasion of the London 2012 Olympic Games we are please to present a collection of 80 Olympic posters. If we follow a century of the production of Olympic posters, we will see not only the growth of the Olympics but also its impact on the worldwilde culture and the evolution of the Arts. A unique occasion to acquire one of these Sport Icons.
Gallery Exhibition:  July 27th - August 12th 2012

In 1894 at the large amphitheatre of the Sorbonne in Paris, Pierre de Coubertin declared the revival of the Olympic Games and the creation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC - CIO). The first Olympic Games of the modern era were held in Athens in 1896.

Helsinki 1940 -1952

The Second World War impeached the 1940's Olympics in Helsinki. This poster by Ilmari Sysimetsä represents the sculpture of the famous Finnish runner Paavo Nurmi, holder of 9 gold and 3 silver Olympic medals. The same image was used for the Games of 1952.

Stockholm - Melbourne 1956

Quarantine imposed restriction on the admittance of Animals into Australia and impeded horses from going to Melbourne. The equestrian competitions were held in Stockholm. The poster for these events is inspired by one of the sculptures of the Parthenon, and symbolizes the link between the ancient and modern Games.

"Long considered a minor Art, posters have nonetheless gradually gained universal recognition. It is now a fully-fledge branch of art in its own right; some of the greatest names and the most famous artists have made a point of contributing to this art form.
Posters are not merely a medium for information, a means of transmitting a message, they also seem to awaken and arouse in those who view them a certain reaction or artistic emotion.
Full aware of this double role, the sport movement has made extensive use of this means of expression that transcends all frontiers and which, by its ease of diffusion and reproduction, makes it possible to reach the vast world public".
Juan Antonio Samaranch, IOC president, 1983.
